Reflections in 3d are very important as it shows the realism of the object. Today I am going to show you how to apply reflection in Cinema 4D using some simple steps. This tutorial is basically for beginners who are trying to learn Cinema 4D from scratch.
So, let’s dive in!
Create a Sample Scene
I would suggest you to first create a random scene, like create three spheres just to check if the reflections you are applying are working out correctly.
You can create a sphere in cinema 4d by clicking on the create panel and selecting sphere. You can determine the size according to your will.
Create a New Material
You can create an new material by going to the material editor on the bottom and clicking create on new default material.
After that, select the reflectance panel which is on the left hand side.
Now click remove on the top. This actually removes the default reflection map that is applied to the material.
GGX Reflection
So once you remove the default reflectance material there will be an option to add a reflection below the layers. Click add and select GGX.
Once you add the GGX material, click on the dropdown menu on layer fresnel and select dielectric.
Select conductor option if you wish to have some kind of metal reflections.
And once you select the conductor material below there will be pre-set showing all the default metal texture that is already there. You can play around with these textures to find the right reflection which you might need.
Beckmann Reflection
So another kind of reflection is Beckmann. This reflection will be found on the same panel you have to click add and select Beckmann.
This gives a stronger reflection compared to the other one.
Use Color for Reflection Strength
You can also adjust the strength of the reflection in the layer color dropdown menu where there is an option for changing the color from white to black. Play around with the color but it’s safer to apply something very close to 70 percentage grey.
Using Brightness for Reflection Strength
Adjust the reflection strength using the brightness option found in the layer color drop down menu. The brightness level is from 1-100. The highest number gives the most reflection.
